Trooper Henry Brooks was struck and killed by an automobile while investigating a vehicle crash on U.S. 29, three miles south of Altavista in Pittsylvania County.
Another vehicle entered the area and struck the rear of one of the parked cars before striking Trooper Brooks and three citizens. Trooper Brooks was transported to a hospital in Lynchburg where he succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle who struck him was charged with manslaughter.
Trooper Brooks was both a U.S. Marine Corps World War II veteran and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and served with the Virginia State Police for three years. He is survived by his wife and young son.
In 2022, the U.S. 29 North Bridge was renamed the Trooper Henry Murray Brooks, Jr. Memorial Bridge.
