Guard George Garceau was beaten to death inside the Hillsborough County House of Correction, in Grasmere, during an escape attempt.
The inmate, who was being held pending a trial appearance for auto theft, attacked Guard Garceau and beat him to death with a cribbage board before tying his feet together with his necktie. He was then able to saw through an iron bar in a storage room window and escape from the jail.
The man, 19, was arrested at a friend's apartment in Manchester three days later. He was pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 25 to 30 years in prison. On July 4, 1974, he was stabbed to death by a fellow inmate. The friend was charged with being an accessory to murder after the fact.
