Samuel Norman

Constable Samuel Norman succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained the previous day while attempting to serve an arrest warrant on a man wanted for assaulting a woman in Tarentum Borough.

The subject purchased a pistol after learning that a warrant had been issued for him. Constable Norman located him near the intersection of Third Avenue and Corbet Street, attempting to leave town at the railroad station. As he attempted to take him into custody, the man pulled out the pistol and shot him once in the jaw and once in the head. Constable Norman was taken to his residence, where he succumbed to his wounds the very next morning.

The man fled the scene after the shooting.

Constable Norman was a Union Army veteran of the Civil War. He was survived by his wife and two daughters.

Mr. Norman,

Thank you for your service both to your town and to your state and union. You and my ancestors were members of the 101st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Plus your sister, Louisa, joined the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor you. Rest in Peace, Mr. Norman.
