Officer Herbert Briggs was beaten and then stabbed after being taken hostage by five inmates at the Washington State Penitentiary. The incident later became known as the Lincoln's Day Massacre.

All five inmates were shot and killed.

On today, the 90th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the citizens of the state of Washington. There is other job in Law Enforcement than that of a Corrections Officer.
