Patrolman John Smith succumbed to injuries sustained two years earlier when he was dragged 100 feet while trying to stop a pair of runaway horses.
He was able to return to light duty and continue working for the department. Approximately two years after the initial injury he had to receive emergency surgery and died approximately one week later.
Patrolman Smith had served with the Lynn Police Department for 18 years. He was survived by his wife and nine children.
