View all 9 ReflectionsOfficer Hauswirth was my great-grandfather and father of my grandmother Alice Hauswirth Freeman. Susan Hauswirth died in 1902 reportedly of a botched tonsillectomy. The five children now were orphans who were taken in by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Lippert. Mrs. Lippert was Mrs. Hauswirth's sister, and Mr. Lippert was a chauffeur in Chicago who later founded Sonoma Lodge on Higgins Lake in Michigan. This story of tragedy is part of our family history. But so is the generosity of the Lipperts. Sonoma Lodge, in later years run by adopted son Paul Lippert, became the family resort that we all visited many times over the years, starting in the early 1920s.
