Special Deputy Sheriff Edward Brennan was shot and killed while on duty at the Southern Pacific Railroad yards at Third Street and Central Avenue in Tracy.
That area of the city had heard shots fired at 1 am and 4 am. At 5 am, Deputy Brennan and another officer were investigating another round of shots fired. Deputy Brennan approached two men and was shot before they fled the scene. He was able to fire one shot before collapsing from five gunshot wounds.
Three days later, one suspect was apprehended in Sparks, Nevada. The subject confessed and was committed to the Clark Sanitarium in Stockton.
Deputy Brennan had served as a special deputy with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office for only a few days. He was survived by his wife and child.
