View all 6 ReflectionsSam Jackson was my great-great uncle, the son of my great-great grandfather, Capt. William Jackson of Waterloo, Missouri (he raised a company in the spring of 1861 for the N.E. Mo. Home Guard, but there's no evidence he fought the Mo. State Guard at Athens, Mo. on August 5, 1861, due to internecine conflict in the regiment over David Moore's colonelcy; see my book, Skim Milk Yankees Fighting: The Battle of Athens, Missouri, August 5, 1861 [https://www.camppope.com/sale/c-w.htm]). At some point, Samuel went west and was an Under Sheriff (under Sheriff Jake L. DeHart) at Big Timber, Montana before becoming a U.S. Deputy Marshall. I have a letter he wrote to my grandmother, his sister, Catherine (Jackson) Kearns's daughter in 1897, as the Under Sheriff at Big Timber, along with carte-de-visites of Sitting Bull, with an autograph appended, and Spotted Fawn. I have his 1900 Montana RR pass, signed, perhaps sent back to Missouri with some of his effects at the time of his death. He is shown in a family photo, c. 1875, as a robust man with a large black beard and piercing, narrow eyes.
