Special Officer Williamson Linker was struck and killed by a speeding automobile as he was directing traffic on West Innes Street.
Seconds before he was hit, another officer three blocks away, had taken down the vehicle's license number to prosecute the driver for speeding. The driver was convicted of manslaughter, placed on probation, and ordered to pay Officer Linker's widow $1,100.
Special Officer Linker was survived by his wife and six children.
