Undersheriff Edward Bowers was shot and killed by a man who had been drinking and firing a rifle in his house on Summit Avenue in Prescott.
Undersheriff Bowers and a special deputy went to the man's home after receiving reports of the incident. Undersheriff Bowers went to the front of the home while the deputy went to the back. The man was hiding behind a drapery and shot Undersheriff Bowers once in the chest, fatally wounding him. Undersheriff Bowers ran from the house after being shot but collapsed about 75 yards away.
The deputy witnessed the shooting and fired at the subject, hitting him twice in the leg. The man was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. He was paroled on November 25th, 1928. In March of 1929 he was arrested in Las Angeles, California, for attempted murder and violating his parole. He was returned to the Arizona Penitentiary to serve the remainder of his life sentence.
Undersheriff Bowers was survived by his wife and four children.
