Deputy Samuel Perez suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after chasing and struggling with a suspect. He was taken to Val Verde Memorial Hospital after collapsing, but died a short time later.
Deputy Perez had served in law enforcement for 20 years. He was survived by his wife, two sons, twelve grandchildren, one great-grandchild, mother, and three siblings.
