Chief of Police Albert Bowen was shot and killed in the line of duty while attempting to arrest a man who was waving a pistol in front of a bar known as Stubb's Saloon.
The suspect was sentenced to life in prison but was killed by a group of prisoners who were escaping from the Utah State Prison. Those prisoners had attempted an escape three months earlier and killed Warden Matthew B. Burgher in the process.
Chief Bowen was survived by his second wife, two children, and nine stepchildren. He is buried in Provo City Cemetery.
