Deputy Montelle Williams succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained the previous day when he responded to a domestic disturbance call.
The 66 year-old suspect was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life on December 6, 1967. He was released December 5, 1983, and died three weeks later.
Deputy Williams had served with the Camden County Sheriff's Office for 20 years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
