Add to My HeroesFrederick Booth
Sergeant Frederick Booth was shot and killed while attempting to arrest three suspects for robbing a post office in a nearby town the previous night. As he and citizens attempted to arrest the men one of them produced a .38 caliber revolver and shot Sergeant Booth.
All three suspects were apprehended a short time later. The killer was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life. The other two were sentenced to 7 to 15 years. On July 25, 1919, one of the two was shot and killed in Toledo, Ohio, after attacking a taxi driver.
The killer was released from prison on May 15, 1921. Six months later he was arrested in Detroit and charged with the attempted robbery of a bank in Lamb. In 1885 he and two other men were acquitted of a murder in Michigan. The jurors were horrified and in much doubt about their decision when lightning hit the court house at the exact same time the verdict was read.
