Deputy Sheriff Webb Edwards was shot and killed by a man he was attempting to arrest on a warrant.
The suspect was apprehended six weeks later in Metter, Georgia. On September 29, 1921, he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to die in the electric chair. The South Carolina Supreme Court ordered a new trial and he was again found guilty of murder but sentenced to life on March 8, 1923. He had a parole hearing in 1932 but the outcome is not known.
Deputy Edwards had served with the Saluda County Sheriff's Office for 12 years. He was survived by his wife and six children.
