Chief of Police L. Newton Bogart was shot and killed by a mentally disturbed person who walked up to him on West Main Street and shot him five times with a .32 caliber handgun at 8:30 p.m.
The suspect then turned himself into a deputy sheriff. The 25-year-old suspect was sentenced to the Tennessee state prison for the criminally insane in Nashville. He was released in 1973 and died in 1998.
Chief Bogart had served with the Sevierville Police Department for 30 years. He was survived by his wife and children.

The city of Sevierville no longer honors the officers that were killed in the line of duty. Our family would love to see this tradition continued and notify us so we may attend along with other families.
