Deputy Sheriff Frank Hayden died from injuries he received in Mount Holly when a man he was attempting to serve foreclosure papers on attacked him with an axe.
Deputy Hayden managed to shoot the suspect in the leg as a companion tried to subdue him. The suspect escaped but was later apprehended at his home.
The suspect was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison on September 23, 1908.
Deputy Hayden was survived by his wife and four children. In addition to his duties as a deputy sheriff, he also served as the tax collector and town constable of Ludlow.
