Detective William Weathers was shot and killed when he attempted to stop a man suspected of having tampered with railroad signals in Towanda Borough, Pennsylvania.
For several weeks signals had been tampered with on railroads north of Wilkes-Barre causing several train wrecks. Detective Weathers the agency's police chief were in the area when they noticed a man running down the tracks. When Detective Weathers ordered the man to halt, the suspect turned and shot him.
Six weeks later the police chief was in Pittston, Pennsylvania, when he noticed a little white dog walking down a local street. He remembered that the same dog was with the man who killed Detective Weathers. The dog led police to the suspect who was apprehended and charged with Detective Weathers' murder.
Detective Weathers was a U.S. Army veteran of the Spanish-American War. He was survived by his wife, son, and two sisters.
