Inspector Lloyd P. Criss was walking on the gangplank of the steamer Saucen that was docked in the Houston Ship Channel's Turning Basin in Harris County, Texas when he slipped and fell.
He struck his head on a piece of timber attached to the pier. Several crew members dove into the water and brought him ashore within minutes, but they were unable to revive him.
Inspector Criss had served with the United States Customs Service for 20 years. He was survived by his wife, four sons, and one daughter. He was buried in Galveston, Texas.
