Private First Class James Boyd was shot and killed when he and another MP encountered two suspects who had just robbed the gas station at Fort Bragg's exchange.
PFC Boyd and his partner intercepted the suspects as they attempted to flee on foot toward N.C. 210. Despite being mortally wounded, PFC Boyd was able to return fire and wounded one of the suspects. The other MP also returned fire and killed the other suspect.
PFC Boyd was assigned to the 21st MP Company 503rd MP Battalion. He was survived by his parents, sister, and brother.
In 2010 the United States Army began hosting the "PFC James Boyd Jr. Top Cop Competition," an annual national competition designed to build camaraderie between military and civilian law enforcement agencies.

View all 77 ReflectionsDear Brother, 51 years have gone by since you and I were facing the death angel 4:00pm -5:00pm for reasons only known to God. The death angel took your soul to Paradise, why was I left behind with a broken heart and destroyed emotional system I don't know. My Brother you have been living inside my head ever since and you will be there till my last breath. Continue your peaceful rest with the Lord. By the reality of my age, we will be partners again soon. I'm ready when the Lord calls on me. This earth is no longer what it was 51 years ago when you and I were patrolling the streets of Ft. Bragg, NC. Love you my Brother!
