Deputy Eugene Brister was shot and killed in Alexandria while attempting to arrest a man wanted on a charge of chicken theft.
Deputy Brister located the man sitting in a vehicle and told him he was under arrest. As the suspect exited the vehicle, Deputy Brister began to re-holster his service weapon. As he did so, the suspect opened fire with a .38 caliber revolver, striking Deputy Brister several times.
As the suspect fled, he exchanged shot with an Alexandria police officer, grazing the officer in the face. The officer returned fire and mortally wounded the suspect.
Deputy Brister had served with the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Department for 16 years. He was survived by his wife and two grown daughters.
