Deputy Charles Hodges was shot and killed while walking a prisoner to jail. They were confronted by another man on the street who shot Deputy Hodges with a rifle.
The shooter had been seen with Deputy Hodges earlier in the day. When he approached Deputy Hodges and the prisoner, the prisoner asked the Deputy to walk him to a location to secure bond, which was near the shooter's house. As Deputy Hodges and the prisoner we exiting the bond house the shooter stepped out from behind a tree and shot Deputy Hodges in the heart. The shooter then walked off into the nearby woods, but was arrested the next evening about 6 p.m. in Red Oak; he was convicted of first degree manslaughter and sentenced to nine years in the penitentiary.
Deputy Hodges had served with the Haskell County Sheriff's Office for only 3 months. He was survived by his wife and seven children.

View all 9 ReflectionsWhen I found that an officer from Haskell County had been killed in the line of duty I was shocked. My Dad served Haskell County a number of years. When I used to visit the Sheriff's office as a kid I never saw any type of memorial for him. My dad said he had never heard from him. This is SO sad. He should never be forgotten. R.I.P. Deputy Hodges. I am trying to bring light to your service.
