Constable Otis Hendrix was shot and killed when he accompanied the county sheriff and several deputies as they conducted inspections at several local bars.

As they entered one of the bars, they were confronted by the owner who told the sheriff to leave. As the sheriff attempted to speak with the man, the man pulled a gun from under his coat and began shooting at the sheriff. The shots missed the sheriff but one of the rounds struck Constable Hendrix, killing him. The other deputies returned fire, killing the suspect.

Otis was my great grandfather. His son, Howard, was my grandfather. Papa never got over the loss of his father. He was a tough man, but I think that is reflective of the times, his occupation and farming wheat during the dust bowl. I think he would have been proud of his sons, Frison, Howard and Bobby. All three men were some of the hardest working people I was ever blessed to know. Texas born, Texas strong. Papa and my grandmother, Ravenel, had moved to Santa Rosa, CA after his father was murdered and they lost the wheat farm, which is where my mom and her siblings were born. My oldest child, Otis Dean, is named for my great-grandfather.
