Add to My HeroesGeorge M. Yeager
Patrolman George Yeager was killed when he fell through a building skylight while searching a building.
Patrolman Yeager was on foot patrol in Manhattan when the watchman from the Hills Brothers company alerted him that there was a fire in a building on Washington Street. Patrolman Yeager and the watchman entered the building and began to search for anyone who might be trapped. A cloud of smoke drove them back and they smashed out a window and climbed out onto the awning for the building. While on the wooden awning, Patrolman Yeager stepped on a skylight, fell to the sidewalk, and fractured his skull.
Patrolman Yeager was taken to the Hudson Street Hospital where he died ten days later from his injuries.
Patrolman Yeager was assigned to the 8th Precinct (Leonard Street Station), which no longer exists today.

View all 10 ReflectionsWhen I was very young, probably 7 or 8, I visited my grandparents in Queens, NY. While there we were playing in the basement and discovered an officers baton. At that age I was surprised at how big it was. We pretended to be police officers and tried twirling the baton as if walking a beat.
We were scolded for playing with the baton. I asked where did it come from. I was told it was my grandfather’s uncle’s baton. He was a New York policeman. I was surprised by this but also confused. Who was this man?
I came to find out many years later that the baton belonged to my Great Grand Uncle George Yeager. Officer Yeager you are not forgotten. Your family is rightfully proud of your service. Rest In Peace.
