Deputy Walter Fisher was shot and killed in a gun battle with an automobile thief. An hour earlier the suspect held up a doctor in Mokena, taking his money and his car. Deputy Fisher and his partner spotted the car near Orland. After chasing the suspect through two counties the officers shot out the rear tires forcing the suspect to stop. The suspect jumped out and opened fire on the officers with two pistols. Deputy Fisher was hit five times. The suspect, who was shot and wounded by one of the deputies, fled into a nearby field.

It was later discovered that the suspect had robbed a mail truck of $37,000 in Indiana Harbor, Indiana, earlier that day. When his car broke down he took a freight train to Mokena where he took the doctor's car.

After the suspect shot Deputy Fisher he got another car and drove to a road house near Maywood. While he was having his wounds dressed other bandits saw the canvas sacks containing the money from the mail truck in his car. They overcame the suspect, killed him, and fled with the loot.

Deputy Fisher is a 5 year veteran of the Will County Sheriff's Office; He is survived by his wife and two children.

There was a Lt.Fisher who was a old school Willow Springs cop as long as I could remember from 1979 where I was born and raised until 2012 I believe he passed in the late 2000’s I wonder if this was a relative in them days in that south west suburban area your closest neighbor was 2 miles way. RIP to them both Lt. sunny fisher “fish” was rough on me when I was a punk kid but he was a good man and loved Willow Springs I believe he was related to one of the first big family’s in the area the Tiedts sorry if I got the spelling wrong but they called the unincorporated area around willow springs Tiedtville in stories I heard from some original old-time residence there was only about 700 people in that town when I was born there’s at least 10,000 down after annexing property from the county. Reminds me of them old black and white James Cagney crime movies imaging that area 90 years ago I know the exact location to this day. Sounds like a brave man RIP to All who died protecting the good. But that was Capone’s territory at that time he had hide outs speak ezs and brothels Tunnels leading from the I&M canal One bar still stands to this day on archer Avenue it’s been completely remodeled there is a tunnel in the basement sealed off It was a biker bar for a long time now it’s a Irish pub I believe AL Capone’s original picture is still on the wall On the southside of archer Avenue just west of Willow Springs Road across from the Willowbrook ballroom.
