Deputy Hazard was shot and killed after he and a Federal Indian agent responded to an encampment north of Bishop to investigate reports of a man running amuck with a shotgun. Upon arrival they were met by the suspect who opened fire wounding both, the agent seriously. As Deputy Hazard fell to the ground he managed to return fire hitting the suspect twice. The suspect shot him again and then approached him and struck him in the head with the butt of the shotgun, crushing his skull.
The suspect, 25, was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life. He was paroled on March 19, 1943.
Deputy Hazard was survived by his wife and three children.
