Officer Matt Rittenhouse was killed in an automobile collision when his patrol car went out of control shortly before midnight.

It is believed that severe weather and rain-slicked roads, the result of Hurricane Ivan, contributed to the crash.

Officer Rittenhouse had served with the Harriman Police Department for three years and had previously served with the Roane County Sheriff's Department for two years. He is survived by his parents and two sisters.

Precious Son of my Life
There is so much I want to say to you but you hear it every day, so I’m going to tell you the funny thought running through my heart and mind right now. You and Granny are the only ones in our immediate family with a tattoo. Lol. And you both have a cross. Your’s so big, Granny’s so small. Both so unique. Could you please go ask her right now what was she thinking on that trip to Chicago that made her get a tattoo!!!! She would always just laugh that little Granny laugh if we said anything about it :). I’m so glad you got yours….even though it doesn’t say I Love Mom hahahaha. It’s a treasure and comfort to see always.

I love you Matthew, to eternity and beyond. And am always thankful God gave you to all of us.
