Chief Deputy Seymore Clark was shot and killed when he and another deputy interrupted the theft of goods from a train in Uintah.
The two deputies were transporting a prisoner to the county jail when they observed a man acting suspiciously. When they went to investigate the man suddenly opened fire, striking both deputies and their prisoner. Chief Deputy Clark was shot four times and died of his wounds. The other deputy and the prisoner recovered.
The suspect fled the scene and was never apprehended.
Chief Deputy Clark had served with the Weber County Sheriff's Office for two years and had previously served as a Utah Fish and Game officer. He was survived by his wife.
