Patrolman Anthony Woods was shot and killed after responding to a domestic violence call at 2737 Tarry Park.
Patrolman Woods arrived alone at the call at approximately 7:20 pm. After he entered the residence the male subject shot a woman who was inside, wounding her in the arm and leg. A struggle ensued between Patrolman Woods and the suspect, and Patrolman Woods was shot twice in the head and twice in the shoulder.
The man tried to escape out the back of the house but committed suicide when he was confronted by an arriving officer.
Patrolman Woods was transported to the Regional Medical Center where he died a short time later.
Patrolman Woods had served with the Memphis Police Department for seven years and was assigned to the East Precinct. He is survived by his wife, who served as a deputy jailer, two sons, and a daughter.
