Officer Gregg Winters succumbed to gunshot wounds suffered 11 days earlier after being shot while transporting a prisoner at 1:45 a.m.
Officer Winters had arrested the subject for public intoxication, and he was placed in the rear seat of his squad car after being searched by another officer. Approximately one-eighth mile from the jail, the handcuffed subject was able to pull out a concealed .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun and shot Officer Winters in the back of the head and neck five times.
The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. On June 15, 2007, he was executed by lethal injection.
Officer Winters had served with the Muncie Police Department for four years. He is survived by his wife, two sons, and a brother who serves as a deputy chief of the Muncie Police Department.
