Constable Stevens was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man who was firing a gun in the street. Constable Stevens was off duty when he received the report and responded to the scene. When he attempted to arrest the man a struggle ensued and the suspect gained control of his service weapon and shot him.

The suspect, a local doctor, was apprehended three weeks later in Atlanta, Georgia.

Constable Stevens had been with the agency for 12 years. He was survived by his wife and five children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 119th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
