Chief of Police Samuel Stair was shot and killed while walking a suspect to jail. He had just arrested the 19-year-old suspect for robbery and was attacked by the man in front of the Wilkes-Barry and Hazleton Railway station. The suspect escaped and was never apprehended.
In March of 1915 skeletal remains of a man found in a woods four miles from Dupont were thought to be those of the suspect, but it could never be proven.
Chief Stair had served with the Nuangola Borough Police Department for ten years. He was survived by his wife and ten children.
