Deputy Constable William Hicks was shot and killed by a federal prohibition agent in a case of mistaken identity at the Sims Bayou bridge along the Houston-Galveston Road.
Constable Hicks and another constable came across the two federal agents transferring a case of confiscated liquor into their car. Believing the federal agents were bootleggers, the constables confronted them. The two federal agents also thought the two constables were bootleggers and a shootout ensued in which Constable Hicks was fatally wounded.
Deputy Constable Hicks was survived by his mother, three brothers, and one sister.
