Officer Edward Kyser died two days after being shot while investigating a theft.
He had arrested a man for stealing a hat at a local hotel when the suspect suddenly produced a handgun and shot him. The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to death but died in prison in March of 1888.
Officer Kyser had served with the Parsons Police Department for two years. He was survived by his wife and three children.
