Captain Alfred Campagne was shot and killed while chasing a suspect in a housing area at Ft. Meade, Maryland.
He had responded to the scene of a suspicious person attempting to break into automobiles in the 1800 block of Patton Drive. Upon arrival, the suspect began to flee before turning and firing at Captain Campagne.
The subject was wanted for murder at the time of the incident. He was arrested by members of the Baltimore City Police Department in October 1969. He was subsequently charged with Captain Campagne's murder and the murder of a citizen that occurred several months prior. The subject was acquitted of Captain Campagne's murder in June 1971. Murder charges against him were also dropped in connection with the citizen's murder, although prosecutors continued to pursue burglary charges as part of the same incident.
Captain Campagne was a Vietnam War veteran and recipient of both the Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart for being wounded in action during the Tet Offensive of 1968 near the United States Embassy in Saigon. He is survived by his wife and child.
