Police Officer Kilonzo Masembwa was killed in a vehicle crash on New Hampshire Avenue in Takoma Park while responding to backup officers.

Officers were responding to an alarm at Langley Park- McCormick Elementary School and requested backup when they spotted a suspect. While Officer Masembwa was en route, he lost control of his patrol car on the wet pavement and struck a utility pole.

Officer Masembwa had served with the Prince George's County Police Department for one year. He was survived by his parents.

25 years. You would think it would feel like such a long time ago, but honestly, it feels like yesterday. I thought as time went on, today would be easier, but it’s not. As I sit back and reminisce, I’m so thankful for the time we did share. From listening to you sing and play on your keyboard to you chasing us around the yard.

You were such a bright light. Whenever I was around you, you never yelled or cursed, and you always had a smile on your face. You never told me no. There wasn’t anything you wouldn’t do for us. All of my memories of you are filled with you smiling, being happy, and completely present in the moment.

I wish I could have just one more day with you. One day to hug you, ask you a million questions, laugh with you, smile with you, and introduce you to AJ. She would have loved you.

Thank you for being such an amazing uncle. Thank you for encouraging me to pursue my dreams and make you proud.
