Patrol Officer Peter Larsen died of a gunshot wound sustained 14 years earlier when he responded to a kidnapping complaint.
After arriving on the scene, the suspect, who was the victim's estranged boyfriend, shot both Officer Larsen and the victim in the head twice. The victim died the following month. Officer Larsen was left a quadriplegic and in a comatose state until his death at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 15th, 1998. His wife had cared for him since the shooting.
The subject was convicted of attempted murder and abduction following the initial shooting and was sentenced to 77 years in prison. In April 2000, he committed suicide while incarcerated in Racine.
Officer Larsen had served with the Beloit Police Department for 16 years. He was survived by his wife.
He is buried in Emerald Grove Cemetery, Emerald Grove, Wisconsin.
