Chief Marshal James Kautz died from injuries he suffered one month earlier after being struck by a vehicle at the scene of an accident.
Chief Marshal Kautz was assisting the Michigan City Police on U.S. 12 near State Road 212 when he was struck at approximately 5:45 pm.
Chief Marshal Kautz was a United States Vietnam War veteran, awarded the Bronze Star three times, and served with the Long Beach Police Department for 22 years.
