Patrolman Samuel Banks succumbed to injuries he received when he was struck by a streetcar on the Sharon Line while delivering checks to other officers.
He was attempting to cross the tracks at Stop 7 when the westbound streetcar struck him, knocking him 250 feet. He suffered severe head and internal injuries and died a short time later.
Patrolman Banks had served with the Youngstown Police Department for at least nine years. He was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
The Sharon Line Streetcar ran along Jacobs Road, connecting Youngstown with Sharon, Pennsylvania.
