Sergeant Lloyd Verrett succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained on October 1st, 1967, when he was shot at a bar on Louisiana Avenue as he answered a report of a holdup.
When he entered the bar he found two men holding a barmaid at gunpoint. As he tried to talk them into letting her go they shot him three times.
Both suspects, ages 19 and 21, were arrested, convicted of murder, and sentenced to death. Their sentences were later commuted to life.
Sergeant Verrett was survived by his wife and two children.
