Sergeant Richard Trembath was killed in a motorcycle crash accident while returning from a two-week training course at the academy in Sacramento.

When he attempted to pass a vehicle in the middle lane, another car was also passing a vehicle, and they collided head-on. Sergeant Trembath was thrown from his motorcycle and killed instantly.

The day he was killed was his last day as a motorcycle officer. He had just been promoted to Sergeant and was scheduled to receive a cruiser the next day.

Sergeant Trembath had served with the California Highway Patrol for ten years. He was survived by his wife, two children, and parents.

Your EOW occurred 2 day prior to my birthdate. My parents were so close to you and your family in Walnut Creek. Through the years, my parents always supported the CHP and I knew so many of the officers that came into their diner to listen to the short wave radio as I grew up. In 1964 as fate would have it, I entered the CHP academy. The CHP has been in our family for over 80 years. I retired after 27.7 years from the CHP and will always remember all of the fine and respected officers that I have been in contact with throughout my life.
