Game Warden Frank Tompkins was shot and killed in the general store in Clinchport in Scott County.
He was shot twice in the abdomen by a former deputy sheriff and mail carrier who held a grudge against him.
The suspect was taken into custody. He was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to seven years.
Game Warden Tompkins was hired to replace Game Warden Harvey M. Carter, who was killed in the line of duty on September 2, 1930.
Game Warden Tompkins was a United States Army WWI veteran and had served with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources for four years. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, and two sons.
