Federal Prohibition Agent Hunter Stotler was shot and killed by an informant during an investigation.
Agent Stotler and two other agents had traveled to Hagerstown, Maryland, to interview the informant about reports of a 2000 gallon steam boiler still. The other two agents went to their hotel but Agent Stotler remained behind to further question the informant. The information shot Agent Stotler as they drove to Boonesboro to interview another subject.
The agent was convicted of the murder but the conviction was overturned by the Maryland Court of Appeals. He was ordered to stand a second trial.
