Deputy Stamper was shot and killed after responding to a report of a shoot-out in progress between coal miners. The mines were having a dice game in a tent when a confrontation erupted. Some of the upset miners started shooting at each other. When the shooting had spilled over into the community sending citizens for cover, a messenger was sent to summon Deputy Sheriff Stamper who lived in Dawson.
When Deputy Stamper arrived he was shot in the face. Deputy Stamper was able to return fire but did not strike the suspect. The suspect was later apprehended and sentenced to death by hanging. He was executed on March 31, 1911.
