Patrolman George Angeli was struck and killed by a drunk driver while investigating an accident on Curran Memorial Highway at approximately 11:15 p.m.
The 16-year-old driver and five companions ran from the car after hitting Patrolman Angeli. He struck Patrolman Angeli so hard that his service revolver and holster were ripped from his belt and embedded in the car's fender. It was estimated that he was driving between 90 and 95 miles per hour. The driver was arrested and charged with drunk driving, reckless driving, and speeding.
The driver was found delinquent of the traffic charges and fined $1,250.00, ordered to pay Patrolman Angeli's family $1,000.00, placed on three-year probation, and revoked his license for ten years. He was also left blind in one eye due to the collision.
Patrolman Angeli was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran and had served with the North Adams Police Department for six years. He was survived by his wife, three children, mother, and three siblings.
