Trooper Ernest Simpson was killed in an automobile crash at the intersection of Main Street and West Main Street in the Village of Bainbridge.

Trooper Simpson was serving subpoenas for the County Court at Cooperstown when a vehicle with faulty brakes struck his police car. The vehicle flipped over, and he was pinned underneath the vehicle.

Trooper Simpson had served with the New York State Police for nine months, assigned to Troop C at Sidney. He was survived by his parents.
