Trooper Phebus was off duty and returning home after a weekend out of town when he encountered what he believed to be a vehicle crash after seeing the vehicles collide. He identified himself and asked the female to find a phone to call 911. The male subject shot Trooper Phebus after she left the scene.

View all 48 ReflectionsI along with my Sergeant were responsible for delivering the unfortunate news to Trooper Mark Phebus' parents. I just became a Trooper myself in 1988 and I was also 23 years. That day has stayed with me ever since. I'll will never forget it. I didn't know Trooper Phebus personally but I know enough from the facts of that event he was true Texas State Trooper. I was also there the day we found the suspect who cowardly killed himself next to nearby train tracks. The sub-human broke his leg after what we believed was an attempt to jump on a moving train to escape.
