Trooper James Scotland succumbed to injuries he received in a vehicle crash on February 14, 1935.
Trooper Scotland and another trooper were traveling on Route 39 (current-day Route 206) near Rising Sun Road when a vehicle struck them head-on during heavy rain and fog. The troopers were transported to Mercer Hospital. The other trooper suffered a broken foot. Trooper Scotland died from his internal injuries four days later.
He was a United States Coast Artillery WWI veteran and had served with the New Jersey State Police for almost four years. He was survived by his wife, parents, three brothers, and two sisters.
