Deputy Sheriff Kirk Schroeder was killed in an automobile crash while responding to another crash near Sunnyside.

He and his partner were responding to the crash from Hebron. They had just passed through Johnsburg en route to Sunnyside when the patrol car left the wet, slippery roadway on a sharp curve. Deputy Schroeder, who was the passenger, suffered fatal injuries when the vehicle struck a culvert on the passenger side.

Deputy Schroeder served as a part-time deputy with the McHenry County Sheriff's Office. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, one grandchild, parents, and sister.
