Officer Charles W. Schoof was shot and killed after catching a man breaking into a storage shed in an alley between Mullet and Clinton Streets.
There were no witnesses to the shooting, but a crowd gathered after hearing the shot and began to chase a man holding a revolver. The subject was able to flee without being caught by the crowd.
The 24-year-old suspect was apprehended, convicted of murder, and sentenced to life. In 1922 he was pardoned by Governor Alex J. Groesbeck. On September 5, 1923, he was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest.
Officer Schoof had served with the Detroit Police Department for one year. He was survived by his parents, brother, and three sisters.
